Even though there are now many good compact digital and mirrorless camera models available on the market, DSLR cameras still remain as the favored choice of many professionals and photography enthusiasts. This is because DSLR cameras offer such great, astonishing image quality. Now, if you are looking for a DSLR camera available for a budget under a thousand bucks, you can put Canon SL1 and Nikon D3200 into your consideration. Both Canon and Nikon are renowned names in the industry, so we cannot underestimate either product. Even so, we may note that Nikon D3200 is currently standing at a slightly lower price point than Canon SL1. So, which DSLR camera should you choose?
Design
Are you looking for a compact and portable DSLR camera? If so, you are in good luck. Both Canon SL1 and Nikon D3200 are very compact and portable for a DSLR camera. Still, Canon SL1 is the smaller and lighter one between the two. It has such a small and lightweight form factor, making it an ideal choice for easy traveling. However, people with big hands may find it a little bit awkward to handle. On the other hand, Nikon D3200 has a thud bigger body, which when combined with the texture gripping area will provide better handling. Canon SL1 has already implemented the touchscreen control together with dial and button controls, whereas Nikon D3200 does not support touchscreen. (Read also: Canon SL1 vs. T3i)
Features and Performance
Both models actually start very quickly; both can turn on within less than a second. Both models also support JPEG as well as RAW formats. Canon SL1 offers the convenience of an unlimited JPEG buffer capacity, allowing you to shoot in the format literally continuously. However, the RAW buffer capacity is 8 shots. Nikon D3200 has a buffer capacity of 100 JPEG shots or 12 RAW shots. The numbers are big already, so we consider the bigger RAW buffer capacity of Nikon D3200 to be a better advantage.
Canon SL1 offers a higher maximum extended ISO, up to 12800, allowing you to answer the challenges of difficult lighting conditions. Another strong advantage is the on-sensor phase detection, which Nikon D3200 doesn’t have. With the feature, Canon SL1’s AF will be faster and more powerful for tracking moving objects. Nikon D3200 only has 6400 maximum extended ISO, but it offers a higher optical resolution of 24.2 MP with bigger pixels. It can create bigger images with better sharpness and details, and it will deliver better, more accurate colors and dynamics.
Canon SL1 vs. Nikon D3200
In general, Nikon D3200 is a better value for the money. It is slightly more affordable, and it offers better resolution, dynamic range, and RAW performance. However, Canon SL1 can be an excellent alternative if the phase detection can be a big benefit, such as if you regularly shoot fast-moving objects like in sports photography or for video recording.
