In this article, we are going to compare two Canon cameras, Canon SL1 and Canon T3i. Both of these two products come from the Canon Rebel series. The two are basically standing in a similar price range at the moment. However, we also need to account the fact that Canon SL1 is newer whereas Canon T3i is an older model. So, how do they compare to each other? Which Canon camera should you choose, Canon SL1 or Canon T3i? Let us see below.
Design
Even though both share some similarities in the designs and layouts, Canon SL1 is actually smaller and lighter than Canon T3i. This means better portability and handling. In addition, Canon SL1 already supports touchscreen control in addition to the dial and button control, allowing for easy, quick, and intuitive operation. Canon T3i does not support touchscreen, so it is a nice advantage. Both of these two DSLR cameras come with an eye-level viewfinder for better framing, a built-in flash, a hot shoe for easily mounting accessories, also an external mic jack and an HDMI output, which are very useful for recording videos.
Performance
Canon SL1 is not only talking about the better design; it also offers much improved performance. First, it has a significantly faster startup, allowing you to catch the moment more quickly. Second, it offers a higher maximum ISO. Canon T3i only has 12800 maximum extended ISO, but Canon SL1 increases this number to 25600. As the effect, it can be much more powerful and versatile for handling challenging light conditions. Finally, it has a much better buffer capacity. Previously, Canon T3i can only shoot up to 9 JPEG shots or 5 RAW shots continuously. Now, Canon SL1 offers an unlimited JPEG buffer capacity. You can shoot in JPEG continuously, non-stop. For RAW, the buffer capacity is 8 shots.
Image Quality
Both models are powered by 18 MP APS-C image sensors. So, they are basically able to produce images with similar quality. In general, the images are satisfyingly sharp, crisp, and detailed. The colors are vibrant and solid. However, in low-light conditions, Canon SL1 obviously shoots better, thanks to the higher extended ISO. In dim and dark environments, the images are still visible and finely detailed.
Canon SL1 vs. T3i
Between these two models, Canon SL1 is the sure fire. It has the touchscreen control, higher maximum ISO, and better buffer capacity for better continuous shooting performance.
