The first difference between Canon Vixia HF G20 vs G10 is their dimensions. In a glance, these two camcorders look quite similar to each other. Their layouts are mostly similar. They each have a display with a touchscreen panel on the left, a handle strap on the right, a large lens on the front, and a viewfinder on the rear.

On the other hand, Canon Vixia HF G10 is slightly shorter as it measures 5.9 inches long, 3.0 inches wide, and 3.1 inches tall, while the weight is about 1.3 lbs.

Indeed, the differences are quite marginal. This is just to let you know that Canon Vixia HF G20 will require slightly more space than Canon Vixia HF G10 in storage. Both models are generally compact, lightweight, and portable. They are very easy to carry around.

There are also a few minor differences in the design. Firstly, Canon Vixia HF G20 has a lens hood with a rectangular opening, whereas Canon Vixia HF G10 has a lens hood with a circular opening. Not a big deal, but G20 somehow looks more stylish and sophisticated than G10 because of this.

Secondly, Canon Vixia HF G20 comes with a rubber eye cup which surrounds the viewfinder. This will allow you to put an eye comfortably and steadily on the viewfinder. Meanwhile, Canon Vixia HF G10 doesn’t have this feature, so using the viewfinder will be a bit awkward.

Image Sensor
When choosing between Canon Vixia HF G20 vs G10, it is worth a note that Canon Vixia HF G20 is actually a newer model, whereas Canon Vixia HF G10 is an older model. Unsurprisingly, G20 comes with a more advanced image sensor than G10.

If we take a look at the specifications, there doesn’t seem to be a difference. Each camcorder here is said to use the Canon HD CMOS Pro image sensor, which has a size of 1/3-inch and a total resolution of 2.37MP. Each camcorder here is able to capture videos and still images in Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels).

However, the manufacturer says that G20 has a more advanced image sensor which is able to gather 20% more light than G10. As the effect, you can expect improved low-light performance along with extraordinary dynamic range and color gradation. In use, the difference in image quality is quite noticeable, especially when shooting in a dim environment.

Both camcorders are able to deliver sharp and bright images with solid, accurate colors under broad daylight. G20 tends to deliver more vivid colors than G10, but this is not very noticeable when the environment has enough light. The images provided by Canon Vixia HF G10 in ideal conditions are already very good.

When shooting in a low-light condition, the difference in performance becomes much more noticeable. G20 consistently provides sharper and brighter images than G10. If you want to get decent quality footage at night, Canon Vixia HF G20 should be your choice.

Some people say that Canon Vixia HF G20 feels more like a firmware upgrade over Canon Vixia HF G10, before anything else. This is actually a good thing. The user interface of G20 indeed feels a lot more intuitive and convenient to use than G10.

There are only minor differences in the menu layouts and structures. If you have ever used G10 or another Canon Vixia camcorder before, you won’t find any trouble in using and getting familiar with G20.

What makes Canon Vixia HF G20 so great is the more precise control. Previously, on Canon Vixia HF G10, getting the right values for things like hue and saturation can be very tricky. The controls are fiddly. However, the controls on the newer model have been improved so that getting the right values won’t take too much patience and effort.

Well, if you can improve your videos in post-production, the fiddly color controls of G10 won’t be a major problem. But, for people who need to get their videos right after shooting, the improved color controls of G20 are invaluable.

Image Stabilization
Next, Canon Vixia HF G20 vs G10 have different IS technologies. Canon Vixia HF G20 come with a much better image stabilization system than Canon Vixia HF G10. While the older camcorder is not bad, the newer model is much more reliable and easier to use.

Canon Vixia HF G10 is equipped with the Dynamic SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). This optical system relies on a lens-shift mechanism to compensate for physical vibrations. The performance is generally good. It can minimize blur and deliver fairly sharp images, even if you are shooting without a tripod or shooting while walking. There are three IS modes: Standard, Dynamic, and Powered.

Canon Vixia HF G20, however, comes with the Intelligent Image Stabilization. It combines the optical image stabilization used by previous generations with advanced algorithms that enable the system to automatically select the best IS mode in any condition. There are more specialized IS modes: Standard, Dynamic, Powered, Macro, and Tripod. The overall performance is indeed better, as it consistently provides sharper and more stable footage.

Included Software
Lastly, these two models are bundled with different software. G20 includes more apps than G10. For people who already have their own choices of editing software, the included apps won’t give any real value. But for new users, the included apps can be quite handy to begin with.

Canon Vixia HF G10 only includes the Pixela Video Browser software. Through this app, you can perform various AVCHD editing tasks, such as trimming videos, reordering and combining scenes, and adding titles, transition effects, or soundtracks. This app can also convert your high definition videos into standard definition or convert into the optimum resolution for Internet transmission.

Canon Vixia HF G20 also comes with the Pixela Video Browser software. In addition, also included in the bundle is the Canon ImageBrowser EX software. This app enables easy still-image management. This app also allows you to edit, print, or share still images.
